Autism Team Make-and-Take/TEACCH Workshops
A two-day TAP 1.1 Basic Elements of Structured Teaching sponsored by the NIA was held in Geneva. This workshop is the pre-requisite for the 5-day TAP 2 Setting Up Structured Teaching Classrooms workshop. Presenters were Christopher Flint, an autism specialist and the creator of Ready 2 Learn materials designed for use with children with autism, and Kristina Johnsen of The Autism Program.
Workshop participants received training in the Basic Elements of Structured Teaching including Assessment, 1:1 Teaching, Behavior, Communication, and Leisure Skills & Social Development. Instruction in each area was accompanied by video demonstrations of the instructor working with a variety of students with autism in a multiple settings. In addition, participants had the opportunity to observe, assess, and work in teams to develop structured teaching materials for specific students.
Workshop participants commented that this training provided them with a much broader understanding of the rationale, effectiveness, and implementation of structured teaching. The opportunity to work in teams to design a number of structured teaching activities was invaluable. Everyone left wanting MORE!
